NIC and Others donates GH¢100,000 to Support Victims of El-Wak Stadium Stampede

The insurance industry, led by the Commissioner of Insurance, Dr. Abiba Zakariah, has donated GH¢100,000.00 to the 37 Military Hospital to support the treatment of victims of the military recruitment stampede that occurred on 12th November 2025 at the El-Wak Stadium.

 

Presenting the cheque on behalf of the industry, Dr. Zakariah reaffirmed the sector’s unwavering commitment to national support, social responsibility and the protection of lives and livelihoods. She noted that the donation reflects the industry’s long-standing belief in collaboration during moments of national distress.

Dr. Zakariah also revealed that the insurance industry is establishing a National Insurance Disaster Fund to provide structured, sustainable support during national crises. According to her, this contribution marks the beginning of long-term interventions aimed at strengthening national resilience. She emphasized the industry’s readiness to work with stakeholders to ensure that lessons are learned, systems are reinforced, and assistance reaches those who need it most.

 

The donation was made possible through the collective contribution of key industry bodies including:

  • The National Insurance Commission (NIC)
  • The Ghana Insurers Association (GIA)
  • The Insurance Brokers Association of Ghana (IBAG)
  • The Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana (CIIG)
  • The Ghana Insurance University College
  • The Ghana National Bureau of the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme

Receiving the cheque on behalf of the 37 Military Hospital, Commodore Seth Adjei Adjetey, Head of the Surgical Department, expressed profound gratitude for the industry’s timely and compassionate support. He described the donation as highly significant, especially as several victims remain on admission in the ICU, emergency units and general wards.

Commodore Adjetey assured that the funds would be used judiciously to enhance the treatment and recovery of the injured. While acknowledging the Military High Command’s ongoing support with investigations, medications and other essential care, he noted that the additional financial assistance from the insurance industry would greatly improve the quality of care and contribute to saving more lives.

 

He very touched by expressing the hospital’s deep appreciation for the insurance industry’s solidarity during this challenging period, describing the gesture as a strong demonstration of national unity and compassion.
