25 September, 2018
The Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana, held its first
residential conference and general meeting at the Aqua Safari Resort in
Ada in the Greater Accra Region last week.
It was held on the theme “Professionalism, Integrity and Excellence – The Way Forward for the Insurance Industry”.
Rev. Asante Marfo-Ahenkora, President CIIG said in his welcome
address that he was confident the conference will afford all
participants the opportunity to network and strategies as professionals
in such a relaxed environment and learn from best practices and be
empowered to promote professionalism and engender public trust in the
office.
About 100 participants including the regulator attended the maiden conference.
He indicated that Ghana’s highly rated industry is faced with many
challenges, key among which, he noted is price under cutting and the
size of credit.
The two-day event covered areas such as “the ethics of the
professional, under cutting and illegal payments to employees of
clients”.
These were the topics treated on first day, with two imminent
practitioners Kwame-Gazo Agbenyadzie and Larry Kwesi Jiagge as the
resource persons.
On the second day, a proposed Solvency Framework was discussed. The
resource persons were Professor Kwame Adom-Frimpong, Managing Director
of Mainstream Re and Seth Eshun, Head of Supervision from the National
Insurance Commission.
Professional forum was also held on the second day to discuss steps
aimed bringing peers together for consensus building and joint direction
on issues of mutual interest.
Solidarity messages were received from the Commissioner of Insurance,
Mr. Justice Ofori, who said “although this is not our first educational
conference and AGM, successfully holding it in-residence reflects our
full commitment and support for our beloved institutes.”
Lena Ado-Kofi on behalf of the brokers commended the governing
council and the organizing committee for putting together the historic
event. She said the topics for discussion are all trendy and on point.
“We agree with the theme: Professionalism, Integrity and Excellence, the
way our for the Insurance Industry.
The Ghana Insurers Association (GIA), in their message said the event
offers CIIG an opportunity to reflect on its mission and values and the
extent to which these have been achieved.
“As an institute with focus on ensuring professionalism of insurance
practitioners, CIIG has a duty to set high standards.
The current
challenge in the insurance industry is not only academic. Practical
tutelage and experience in rudiments of the profession are equally
important. It is therefore, this reason that GIA looks forward to a
training regime that does not only focus on the theoretical aspect of
insurance, but makes mentor-ship important as well.
Continues
professional development must be promoted.
”
The Chartered Insurance Ladies Association, Ghana (CILAG),
represented by its president, Josephine Dosah also sent felicitations to
CIIG. She said it is a simple truism that a critical development of the
insurance industry depends on insurance professionals.
Adding that:
“This forum will help professionals and students of the institute to
acquire the necessary knowledge and skills that underpin the modern
knowledge.
”
Mr. William Coker, CEO of the West African Insurance Companies
Association in his good will message said the event presented an
opportunity to reflect and to take stock of activities and operations of
the past twelve months in the life of the institution.

Research Committee and General-Purpose Committee of CIIG, Dr. Gideon
Amenyedor and Shaibu Ali.
