EMWA donates medical equipment to Children’s Hospital

An insurance broker, Edward Mensah, Wood & Associates Ltd, has donated medical equipment valued at GH¢150,000 to the Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital in Accra.

The equipment, which includes two MTTS Firefly Phototherapy units and two Vayu Bubble CPAP systems, are to boost the hospital's capacity to treat neonatal jaundice and provide non-invasive respiratory support for newborns with breathing difficulties.

The donation formed part of the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) and was aimed to enhance the hospital's ability to provide timely and effective care for affected children. It also aligned with the company’s efforts to reduce neonatal mortality and improve maternal and child health outcomes.

The Managing Director (MD) of Edward Mensah Wood & Associates Ltd, Yasmin Essifie Mensah, said the gesture was expected to enhance neonatal care at the hospital.

She said the firm was committed to the health and well-being of children in the country, adding that the equipment was to help treat newborns with jaundice and respiratory problems.

“As a company, we believe in giving back to the community, and there is no better way than to support the health of the youngest members of our society.

“These equipment will save lives and give hope to families who need it most,” she said.

Ms Mensah said the firm, established in 1987, had built a reputation of giving back to the community, saying , “every year, we run a CSR programme and we've supported the hospital before but this one was after we recognised the immediate need for more equipment at the neonatal unit”.

She said, ”before the donation, we heard the hospital only had one of each machine, which placed a strain on their ability to treat multiple newborns at once”.

Ms Mensah added that the firm would adopt another ward at the hospital and renovate, saying, “We want to fix another ward from scratch, change the tiles, bring in new beds, fix the curtains and ensure the hospital is better equipped to care for its patients”.

She also urged corporate organisations and individuals to step up and support.

Appreciation

The Head of Clinical Services at the hospital, Dr Margaret Neizer, who received the items on behalf of the management, thanked the donors for the support to help improve the quality of care the hospital offered.

“This donation is timely and will greatly enhance our neonatal care services. The systems will allow us to better serve babies born with conditions that require urgent attention,” she said.

She said, ”support from our private partners is vital to addressing gaps in our healthcare system, especially in neonatal care where infant mortality rates remain a concern”.

The equipment, she said, would enhance the hospital’s capacity to treat newborns suffering from jaundice and breathing difficulties.

Dr Neizer, therefore, assured the team that the equipment would reach the beneficiaries and be efficiently used for the right purposes for the benefit of patients and staff.

More support

Dr Neizer welcomed the support and urged other charitable individuals and organisations to emulate the gesture.

She said the hospital was in high need of logistical support such as pickup truck, resuscitation equipment, medical staff, infrastructure upgrades, among others, adding that other support was highly welcomed.
